From our stash to yours
My name is Claire and I am a fabric-a-holic.
My sister Lucy and I are the founders of Frade - The Fibre Trade.
Lucy and I have been making and creating our whole lives. I've been an avid sewist from a very young age and can fondly remember spending hours admiring my Grandma's two HUGE suitcases of fabric every time I visited her. While Lucy preferred to rummage in Mum's knitting basket looking for spare balls of yarn to crochet.
We both took a creative hiatus in our twenties while we 'integrated into adulthood' (aka University, jobs and other adulting) and upon our return to our creative passions we were delighted to find a massive online Maker community + Indie Patterns and Designers + PDF patterns + online fabric and yarn boutiques = Oh My Goodness! We had found our tribe: our hearts were full.
The more we immersed ourselves in this incredible community the more we noticed common threads: I make because I LOVE it, because it saves me money and because I don't want to support the fast fashion industry. Yet, I MUST have the latest patterns and want ALL the fabrics and yarns. SOUND familiar?
Lucy and I even started our own online fabric store to bring MORE fabric into our lives!
I STARTED FEELING A HUGE DISCONNECT BETWEEN THE REASONS I MAKE MY OWN CLOTHES AND THE WAY I BOUGHT PATTERNS AND NEW FABRICS AND YARNS.
One of the hottest topics in our community has to be the internal stash debate. I have yet to meet a maker who has a stash proportional to the amount they can make in one year. In fact, most of us (myself included) having MANY years of making from our current stash. AND it's pretty much a given that we (I) will go and buy more.
SO we thought 'why not create a stash swapping website?!' A GLOBAL 'super' stash for everyone. In doing so we can help REDUCE the consumption of new fabrics and yarns, help PROTECT our environment, SAVE money, HELP those in need and hopefully find some VINTAGE treasures (think: Grandma's stash!).
And so Frade was born.
Thanks for being our Tribe
Claire and Lucy xx
Using the power of community we hope to reduce the consumption of new fabrics and yarns and subsequently stage a peaceful yet powerful protest against the environmental and humanitarian failures of the textile industry.
